Bicycle patrols police high-density areas utilizing specialized equipment and training. The Patrol Bike Unit officers form problem-solving partnerships with the community, actively patrol areas not accessible to vehicles, and focus on those crime and quality of life problems that impact the community as a whole. The unit is designated as a specialized assignment within the Department and consists of several officers assigned from the Patrol Division and is supervised by a Patrol Sergeant.
To qualify for this assignment officers must have been employed by Riley County Police Department for a minimum of 2 years and pass a short selection process. Bike Officers at Riley County Police Department are certified Police Mountain Bike Officers through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Each member has the physical ability to complete the tasks expected of them, while patrolling on a bike.
