The Riley County Police Department is celebrating 50 years of dedicated service to the people of Riley County as a consolidated agency. January marks 50 years since the Manhattan Police Department, the Ogden Police Department, and the Riley County Sheriff’s Office formed RCPD. 

The consolidation on  January 1, 1974, has proven beneficial to the community by streamlining services and creating a foundation of evidence-based policing focused on community engagement. As a consolidated agency, RCPD has demonstrated a commitment to procedural justice, ethical policing, community trust, transparency in service, fairness in processes, and consistency in what citizens should expect from a law enforcement agency.

RCPD is a county-wide law enforcement agency meaning all Police Officers, Dispatchers, Corrections Officers, and Professional Staff work directly together resulting in real-time communications between staff and leading to well-planned service. Riley County crime rates have been on average 10% lower than the state’s for the past 20 years. 

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, RCPD will hold several events throughout the year to build on community engagement, educate the public on local law enforcement, and engage with other local government agencies. 

RCPD is the oldest nationally accredited and only fully consolidated law enforcement agency in the state of Kansas.
