Arrest Made after Fire Threatens Structures in Hunter's Island Area of Manhattan

News Release

Daniel Lee, 39, of Manhattan was arrested today in association with a fire that threatened structures in a neighborhood south of Ft. Riley Blvd. and an aggravated battery earlier in the day.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the Kansas Fire Marshal.

It was reported Lee hit a 48-year-old man known to him with a kitchen pan causing lacerations while at a residence in the 900 block of S. Collins Lane. The man was transported to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries after leaving the location and reporting the battery. It was also reported Lee burned electronic items belonging to the victim in a fire.

At 11:15 a.m. Monday, September 18, Riley County Fire District #1 and Manhattan Fire Department were dispatched to the residence for reports of smoke and fire. First responders and volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene to find a fire outside threatening two homes and other structures.

Lee was contacted on scene by Riley County Police Department officers and after an initial investigation, arrested for aggravated domestic battery and arson. He remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $20,000.

Crews were able to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. However, a camper and utility trailer did sustain damage. A damage estimate is not available at the time of this release. Donna Barry of Manhattan is listed as the owner of the property.

No injuries to humans, pets, or livestock were reported as a result of the fire.

A total of 15 Riley County Fire District #1 personnel and volunteers, and four Manhattan Fire Department personnel responded with nine fire apparatus.
