On Friday, May 29, 2020, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Riley County Police Department Emergency Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a stabbing in the 3000 block of Anderson Avenue inside Powercat Sports Grill.

Investigation revealed the stabbing to be self-inflicted. The 25-year-old victim was transported to Via Christi Ascension Hospital in Manhattan where he later died.

"I don’t claim to know how everyone in Riley County feels after watching the horrific video of George Floyd in the last moments of his life, but I had the same gut reaction as when Walter Scott was murdered by a police officer in South Carolina and when Ahmed Aubrey was murdered in Georgia by vigilantes and then law enforcement and prosecutors were slow to do their jobs. There’s more examples I could cite.

A little after 12:30 p.m. the Riley County Police Department Bomb Team and the Kansas Highway Patrol Hazardous Device Unit cleared the terminal at the Manhattan Regional Airport and nothing suspicious was located.

Both departments will continue to search along the perimeter of the airport, but at this time no threat has been located.

Lieutenant Tim Schuck recently completed an intensive 12-week accredited college educational program for police command personnel at the Southern Police Institute, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY.  The 143rd Administrative Officers Course included courses on leadership, police administration, legal issues, and organizational performance and behavior.

On Wednesday, May 20th jail visitation will begin again. Visitation is on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with sign-up from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with sign-up from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Visits are 15 minutes per inmate.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Riley County Police Department Dispatch Center was notified of a theft from Walmart in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan.

Monday, May 4th UPDATE:

The kayaker has been identified as Jose Francisco Ramos, 21, of Fort Riley. Our condolences to his family and loved ones.



Emergency crews have recovered a body from the water. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Several emergency crews are searching near the Tuttle Creek ORV Park for a missing 21-year-old man last seen kayaking with friends.
