Beginning in late 2013 the Riley County Police Department began evaluating its community programs and recently announced that in January 2015 several new or improved versions of these programs will begin. Community programs through the Riley County Police Department will also be integrated into a new rewards program, which is a unique concept for law enforcement.

MANHATTAN, KAN.- Officers and detectives with the Riley County Police Department initiated an investigation into a death occurring at 312 Riley Ave. in Ogden, Kansas (Ogden’s Best Gun Range) on December 20, 2014.  Shortly before 4:30 PM the Riley County Police Department’s Dispatch Center received an emergent request for service and immediately dispatched officers along with emergency medical personnel.

The Riley County Police Department (and the Kansas State University Police Department) have received several complaints regarding possible scams in the Manhattan and Riley County Area. These scams are carried out over the phone or via postcard and request that the potential victim supply personal or financial information. RCPD would like to remind the community to question suspicious correspondences and protect personal information.

The Riley County Police Department is proud to announce the retirement of an officer who has spent more than the past 10 years serving the community and the department. On December 18, 2014 the department, friends, and his handler will celebrate his career and wish him a happy retirement.

The Riley County Police Department announced on December 15, 2014 a partnership with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), a free and private social network for neighborhoods, to build a stronger, safer community with the help of Manhattan and Riley County residents. This program will enable the Riley County Police Department to better communicate with residents and replace the previous neighborhood watch program.

Officers with the Riley County Police Department will be taking part in “Tip-a-Cop” on December 10, 2014 beginning at 4:30 PM. The event, which lasts until 8:30 PM, will be located at the Texas Roadhouse in Manhattan and will benefit the Special Olympics of Kansas.

Winter break and holiday vacation season is upon us and that means vacant or unoccupied homes in our community. The Riley County Police Department would like to remind the community of a few tips to help reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime while away from your home over the next month.
