On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the Riley County Police Department will establish and maintain a Command Post at the Manhattan City Park Pavilion in regards to the annual Fake Patty’s Day. This Command Post as well as the Public Information Officer for the Riley County Police Department will host periodic news media briefings or press conferences throughout the day. These briefings are open to news agencies wishing to attend and will be held at 1:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. For more information contact the Public Information Officer directly.

On February 25, 2014, at approximately 2:10 AM, the Riley County Police Department in conjunction with the Manhattan Fire Department responded to a complaint of fire in the 800 block of Moro Street in Manhattan. When emergency crew arrived on scene they found a vehicle on fire. Approximately 5 minutes later another report of fire was received and officers responded to a stairwell at an apartment complex located at 801 Moro Street. Within the next 45 minutes police and fire officials received a complaint of an additional fire at 823 Laramie where another vehicle had been ignited.

On February 24, 2014 at 8:50 PM the Riley County Police Department responded to 1520 Jarvis Drive in Manhattan, KS after receiving a 911 call.
The 21 year old caller reported that he and his roommate had been robbed at gunpoint by three males who had entered their home uninvited. Both victims were struck by the suspects and suffered minor head injuries as a result of the robbery. Both victims were transported to Mercy on College by Riley County EMS and were treated then released. Both victims are students at Kansas State University.

On February 22, 2014, the Riley County Police Department took part in the annual Polar Plunge, to benefit the Special Olympics of Kansas. The police department’s team was sponsored by the local Fraternal Order of Police and was made up of Sworn and Non-Sworn personnel from the department. Several members of the department not only jumped into the 32 degree water but also took part in the 5K race that was held prior to the plunge.

From February 24 to March 7, 2014, the Riley County Police Department will be joining other Law Enforcement Agencies around the state in an effort to stop the dangerous practice of disobeying traffic laws in and around school zones. This enforcement project is also meant to serve as a reminder to drive safely to area student drivers.
According to the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, in 2012, 43 teens lost their lives due to vehicle collisions in the State of Kansas; 74% of these tragic deaths involved teens who were not properly secured in their vehicle.

On February 16, 2014, the Riley County Police Department held its annual Awards Banquet. This banquet honored several members of the department for their hard work and dedication to our community. Along with "Of the Year" awards, several employees received core value awards which mirror the department's core values as well as letters and certificates of appreciation. Also honored at the event were officers who had received awards throughout the 2013 year.

On February 5, 2014 at approximately 9:05 PM, the Riley County Police Department was contacted regarding an armed robbery and aggravated assault that had just occurred at 222 N. 6th Street in Manhattan (the Ray’s Apple Market East location). Upon police arrival it was made known that two subjects, one brandishing a handgun, had entered the grocery store and then a short time later were able to flee the area with an unreleased amount of US currency. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.
