In October of 2010, the Riley County Police Department terminated the employment of police officer Ernest Hamilton for cause. Hamilton appealed his termination to the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency’s Law Board, which found that the termination was based upon substantial evidence and denied Hamilton’s appeal. Hamilton subsequently appealed to the District Court of Riley County, and the Court’s decision was entered on September 13, 2013.

Over the weekend the Riley County Police Department participated in a joint effort to continue to maintain accurate information of registered sex offenders in the Manhattan and Riley County area.

Scholarship Recipient Kristina Gee

The Riley County Police Department is proud to announce the recipient of the first annual RCPD Scholarship Award. Kristina Gee, the daughter of Officer Darla King, was awarded this $500.00 scholarship in August of this year after a selection process conducted throughout the summer. She is currently attending school in Kansas.

On Sunday, September 8, 2013 at approximately 2:30 PM, Officers with the Riley County Police Department were dispatched to the residence of John Burroughs, 68, located at 2500 Farm Bureau Road Lot #277; to conduct a welfare check. At the residence, officers discovered the deceased body of John Burroughs. Due to evidence at the scene this death has been ruled a homicide. The investigation of this incident is ongoing.

The Riley County Police Department had its last of a series of six DUI Saturation Patrols on the evening of September 6, 2013 into the early morning hours of September 7, 2013.

Four officers from the Riley County Police Department were assigned to the Saturation Patrol.  Officers working the Saturation Patrol stopped forty-seven (47) motorists.  Of these, five (5) were evaluated for DUI with one of those being arrested for DUI.  Additionally, thirty-six (36) warning citations and thirteen (13) citations were issued for moving violations.

On September 5, 2013, the Investigations Division of the Riley County Police Department were able to obtain further information on a reported battery in the south central portion of Manhattan, Kansas that was said to have occurred in August of this year.

On Friday September 6, 2013, the Riley County Police Department will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol. Officers involved in the Saturation Patrol will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations. Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption will be evaluated and appropriate enforcement action will be taken. The purpose of this program is to place additional officers in and around the Manhattan area with the goal of detecting and deterring impaired driving.
