In short, scams are designed to gain trust and they prey upon this trust, taking advantage of community members. The Manhattan and Riley County area is fortunate that these cases are not at an epidemic level, however every once in a while the Riley County Police Department is made aware of a potential scam or two. Some of these scams have even created loss or identity theft and can often times be tough for law enforcement to solve.

As part of the #FIRECOP social media event, I was able to spend the day with members of the Manhattan Fire Department. First and foremost, I want to personally and on behalf of the Riley County Police Department thank MFD for their assistance and willingness to take part in an event that hadn’t been done before. I was truly impressed by the things I learned and observed first hand. The following serves as a debrief of my experience and is supplemented with a video showing pieces of my training with them.

We have worked with local news agencies to ensure that our new practices help to make their jobs easier as well and thank them for their cooperation throughout our "beta" test.

Driving is an important aspect of many of our lives and often we take for granted the responsibility we have as drivers. Distractions are increasing with the use of mobile smart phones, texting, tweeting, and checking out our new matches on "Tinder." We check our email, view our Facebook wall, and even shop online; all from the palm of our hands. Hands that should be grasping the steering wheel to your thousand pound four-wheeled missile.

"Unfortunately, the world we live in requires us to take steps which will likely provide additional protection from those who may decide to take advantage of us. Preventing theft is sometimes as easy as locking things up and making sure that they are out of view." -Public Information Officer Mat Droge #88.
